Muay Thai for Beginners

Walking into a Muay Thai gym for the first time can feel intimidating. We get it. Most of our members felt the same way before their first class. But here is the truth - everyone starts somewhere, and the beginner class at Shark Tank Muay Thai is designed specifically for people with zero experience. Coach Omar Samid has been teaching newcomers for years, and the process is straightforward: show up, pay attention, and put in the work.

What to Expect in Your First Week

Your first class at Shark Tank will focus on fundamentals. You will learn how to stand properly, throw a jab, a cross, and a basic kick. Nobody is going to throw you into sparring or ask you to do something beyond your ability. Coach Omar runs structured classes using the BANG Muay Thai system, which means every technique has a number and a clear sequence. This makes learning much easier because the curriculum builds on itself week after week.

Most beginners are surprised by how welcoming the environment is. The experienced members remember being new and go out of their way to help. You will partner up for pad work and drills, and your partner will adjust to your level. The pace is fast enough to keep things interesting but not so fast that you feel lost.

Expect to be sore after your first few sessions. Muay Thai uses muscles you did not know you had - your hips, your core, your shins. This is normal. After about two weeks, your body adapts and the soreness fades. What replaces it is a feeling of capability that is hard to find anywhere else.

Common Fears (and Why They Are Overblown)

"I'm not fit enough to start." This is the number one thing we hear. You do not need to get in shape before starting Muay Thai - Muay Thai IS how you get in shape. Our beginner classes scale to your fitness level. If you need to take a breather during a round, take one. Nobody judges you for it.

"I'm going to get hurt." Beginner classes at Shark Tank do not include sparring. You hit pads, not people. When you eventually progress to sparring (if you choose to), it is controlled and supervised. Coach Omar does not tolerate reckless training partners.

"I'll look stupid." Everyone looks awkward throwing their first roundhouse kick. That is part of the process. Within a month, you will be throwing combinations that feel natural. The BANG numbering system accelerates this because you are not trying to remember names for everything - you just learn the numbers and the movements follow.

What You Need to Bring

For your first class, you need very little. Wear comfortable athletic clothing - shorts and a t-shirt work fine. Bring a water bottle and a towel. Shark Tank has loaner gloves and wraps for beginners, so you do not need to buy gear right away. Once you decide to stick with it (and most people do), Coach Omar can help you pick out your own gloves and wraps.

We recommend showing up about 10 minutes early to your first class so you can fill out a waiver, meet the coach, and get oriented. If you have questions before coming in, reach out through our contact page at /contact or sign up for a free trial class at /free-trial.

How Fast Will You Progress?

Most beginners at Shark Tank start feeling comfortable with the basic combinations within 3 to 4 weeks. By the two-month mark, you will have a solid foundation in the BANG Muay Thai numbering system, decent form on your punches and kicks, and a noticeable improvement in your conditioning.

Progression after that depends on how often you train. Two classes per week is a solid baseline. Three or more and you will see rapid improvement. Coach Omar tracks each student's development and will let you know when you are ready for more advanced drills, sparring, or competition prep if that interests you.

The key is consistency. The people who progress fastest are not the most athletic - they are the ones who show up regularly. Shark Tank's class schedule is built to be flexible for working professionals and students, so finding times that work should not be an issue.
